The city of Dearborn will receive more than $1 million in federal funds to raze abandoned homes and fix up foreclosed homes for resale to first-time buyers, U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn) announced today.

The funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is part of $30 million Michigan is receiving under the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

“I am very pleased that Dearborn will receive much-needed assistance to address home foreclosures and abandonment,” Dingell said in a statement.

The award to Dearborn will raise the city’s total from the program to almost $3.5 million. With its initial funding of $2.44 million, the city bought 58 abandoned or foreclosed homes to demolish or rehabilitate. With the new money, the city expects to fix up or raze 30 more houses.

HUD recently announced it would distribute an additional $1 billion for the stabilization program under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
