DEARBORN – On Sunday, Congressman John Dingell spoke to a packed house at the UAW Local 600 Retiree Pancake Breakfast about his effort to fight for the protection of Social Security.
“I am here today to tell you that I am fighting everyday to make sure your Social Security is safe,” said Congressman Dingell to over 300 retirees. “I have a strong record of fighting against those who want to cut benefits and privatize the program.”
Congressman Dingell’s Republican opponent this election year is on the record as a supporter of privatization of the program.
“My opponent has said he wants to privatize this very successful program,” said Congressman Dingell. “Let’s be very clear about what that means – it means turning your Social Security over to Wall Street bankers. The very same Wall Street bankers that got this country into the economic mess we are in – and the very Wall Street bankers my Republican colleagues want to give more tax breaks to.”
UAW Local 898 retiree George Stoddard said he didn’t want anyone gambling with his Social Security benefits.
“We retirees who rely on Social Security know what’s at stake – it’s a choice between John Dingell, a true champion for Social Security and Rob Steele, who would dismantle the program as we know it and roll the dice with our benefits on Wall Street,” said Stoddard. “We will be sounding the alarm throughout the District about this threat to Social Security and the importance of keeping John Dingell in Congress fighting for us.”
