Congressman Dingell’s Statement on Mitt Romney’s Refusal
to Support Saving GM and Chrysler
DEARBORN–After last night’s debate in which Mitt Romney refused to support the President’s successful actions to shore up GM and Chrysler and save 1.4 million American jobs, Congressman Dingell released the following statement:
“At the time, he literally said “let Detroit go bankrupt,” but last night Mitt Romney doubled down on his contempt for America’s auto industry and all the spin-off jobs it supports that power our economy. The man most likely to carry the Republican banner next year actually defended bailing out Wall Street banks – but when asked about his stance on saving GM and Chrysler at the GOP debate last night, Romney responded: “Should they have used the funds to bail out General Motors and Chrysler? No, that was the wrong source for that funding.”
“The President’s actions to shore up GM and Chrysler saved 1.4 million American jobs and ensured that the American auto industry – the bedrock of American manufacturing – would put middle class families back to work in Michigan and across the United States. And that’s proven to be an investment that’s reaped dividends for American taxpayers.”
