GIBRALTAR — The 3rd annual celebration of World Wetlands Day will be Feb. 2 at Gibraltar Carlson High School from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will feature a wetlands exposition with over 20 displays about wetland conservation.
The public event will be from 12:30 — 3 p.m.
U.S. National Ramsar Committee Chairperson Suzanne Pittenger-Slear, Monroe Power Plant Manager Brian Rice and others will speak on the importance of World Wetlands Day.
“Humbug Marsha” will make her public debut with the national wildlife refuge system mascot “Puddles the Blue Goose.”
Congressman John Dingell will be in attendance as well.
“I am excited that on February 2nd we will be celebrating World Wetlands Day at Gibraltar Carlson High School with nearly 2,000 Downriver high school students,” Dingell said.
“It pleases me to know that we are one of 160 countries around the world celebrating such a wonderful natural resource. Humbug Marsh is Michigan’s first and only ‘Wetland of National Importance’ designated under the Ramsar Convention, and I’m very proud of the work being done to protect and preserve Humbug. World Wetlands Day provides an ideal opportunity to teach our children about the many valuable benefits of wetlands and the importance of wetlands stewardship.”
Gibraltar Carlson is located near the refuge and has a curriculum rooted in environmental education, Principal Bill Stevenson said.
“We work hard to ensure that our students learn the value of wetlands, both locally and globally, and make the connection between healthy wetland ecosystems and human health.
“Our hope is that by instilling this knowledge in our students, we will contribute to the health of the world’s wetlands and the long-term benefits that wetlands provide to people, wildlife, economics, and biodiversity,” Stevenson said.
