Washington -- Two Michigan lawmakers Thursday joined four colleagues in asking for money to be spent this year and next on chemicals that'll help combat the invasive Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes.
Democrats Sen. Carl Levin, D-Detroit, and Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, signed on to a letter addressed to Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Jo-Ellen Darcy, assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works, that said "it is absolutely crucial that the Army Corps have the funds needed to continue its ongoing efforts to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes."
The lawmakers also urged Orszag and Darcy to "identify funds in the current fiscal year to purchase enough pesticides to treat all of the infiltrated waters north of the electric dispersal barrier in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal," as well as ask for more funding for 2011.
