We all know Michigan has been hit excessively hard by the economic downturn.  It started here first and hit us the hardest.  But we are tough and we are fighting back.

Congressman Dingell was an early and strong supporter of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which has saved or created more than 109,000 jobs in Michigan.  It also includes a number of items to help displaced workers with extensions of benefits like unemployment insurance and funds for job training.

We are beginning to see progress with investments in Michigan and jobs coming back.  Enabled by federal stimulus funding, Ventower Industries in Monroe is ramping up to build as many as 300 wind turbine towers per year, employing up to 176 full-time personnel in the first phase of operations.  Also in Monroe County, Sunrise Windows recently manufactured its 1,500,000th window and has added 30 additional jobs at its 105,000 square foot Temperance facility, and it expects another 10-15 hires before year-end.  In Brownstown, dozens of people have been hired by GM to build batteries for the Chevy Volt, and the auto company plans to hire many more.  In Ann Arbor, A123 Systems continues to add jobs for their next-generation battery industries, and A123 will be opening a new plant in Romulus soon.  These are early steps, but they are steps in the right direction.
